Paired Text: The Earth and I by Frank Asch

  • Bright, colorful illustrations and simple text bring this unique story to life. It shows children that they can have a relationship with nature, just as they do with their friends.

Grammar Hunt: Adjectives

  • This issue focuses on ways to describe the Earth.
  • Work together to find and circle every adjective, or describing word, in the issue!

Hands-On Activity: Repurpose It!

Skill: conservation, design

Materials: paper, pencils, crayons, art materials, empty containers

  • One way of keeping Earth beautiful is to make less trash. We can do this by repurposing things instead of throwing them away!
  • Have each child bring an empty, rinsed container to school. It should be from a product that their family has used, such as a yogurt or milk container, a water or soda bottle, an empty cardboard box, or a coffee can.
  • Tell children that when we repurpose something, we find a new way to use it. Talk about how repurposing items might help Earth. Then brainstorm ways to repurpose the containers. Make a list of children’s ideas.
  • Have children sketch their ideas on paper. They can also make the item, if they’d like. Then have them present their repurposed item to the class. What is it used for?
